Los estudiantes ya están acostumbrados a analizar, a organizar su tiempo y a responder a la retroalimentación. “Eso les permite concentrarse en pensar con mayor profundidad, no en adaptarse a nuevas exigencias”, comenta Pett.
APRENDER A PENSAR Y A RELACIONARSE
Cuando define al estudiante IB, Pett se aleja de calificaciones y rankings. “Es alguien que aprende a pensar por sí mismo, a cuestionar con respeto y a entender que el conocimiento no es absoluto”, señala. En las aulas, el énfasis está puesto en el análisis, la reflexión y la construcción de criterio propio. En este camino, las relaciones humanas juegan un rol central. “Cuando un estudiante se siente escuchado y valorado, se atreve a asumir riesgos intelectuales”, afirma. Por ello, el colegio prioriza un sistema pastoral sólido que acompaña a los jóvenes, especialmente en una etapa académicamente exigente como el IB. “The IB works when students arrive with solid academic habits, structured thinking, and selfconfidence,” he explains. This foundation is built from the Early Years through the British curriculum, which provides clarity, progression, and intellectual discipline. Thanks to this continuity, the transition to the IB doesn’t represent a break, but rather a natural evolution. Students are already accustomed to analyzing, organizing their time, and responding to feedback. “This allows them to concentrate on thinking more deeply, not on adapting to new demands,” Pett remarks.
LEARNING TO THINK AND RELATE
When defining the IB student, Pett moves away from grades and rankings. “It’s someone who learns to think for themselves, to question respectfully, and to understand that knowledge is not absolute,” he points out. In the classroom, the emphasis is on analysis, reflection, and developing independent judgment. In this process, human relationships play a central role. “When a student feels heard and valued, they dare to take intellectual risks,” he affirms. For this reason, the school prioritizes a strong pastoral system that supports young people, especially during an academically demanding stage like the IB. The recent recognition from British Schools Overseas, which rated the school as outstanding in all areas, reinforces this holistic vision in which academic excellence coexists with emotional well-being.
FORMACIÓN GLOBAL CON IMPACTO REAL
En el corazón del IB, Pett destaca tres pilares: Teoría del Conocimiento (TOK), el Ensayo Extendido (EE) y Creatividad, Actividad y Servicio (CAS). El TOK invita a cuestionar cómo se construye el saber; el EE desarrolla disciplina investigativa y profundidad académica; y el CAS conecta el aprendizaje con la realidad social. Un ejemplo significativo es la alianza con TECHO Panamá, donde los estudiantes trabajan directamente con comunidades vulnerables. “No se trata solo de ayudar, sino de comprender realidades distintas y reflexionar sobre nuestro rol en la sociedad”, explica. Con una comunidad de más de 50 nacionalidades, el internacionalismo se vive a diario, fortaleciendo la empatía, el diálogo intercultural y la apertura mental. En ese entorno, el liderazgo se entiende como servicio, integridad y propósito.
LIDERAZGO CON VALORES Y PROPÓSITO
Al hablar de liderazgo, Pett se aleja de los esereotipos. “Aquí no formamos líderes por el cargo, sino por el impacto”, afirma. El liderazgo que se fomenta en King’s College Panamá se basa en la integridad, la empatía y el servicio. Los estudiantes asumen responsabilidades, participan en iniciativas escolares y aprenden a trabajar en equipo. “Entienden que liderar también implica escuchar y servir”, comenta.

El director dirige un mensaje a las familias que consideran el Bachillerato Internacional para sus hijos: “El IB no es un programa para la perfección, es un programa para el compromiso”. Explica que está diseñado para estudiantes con curiosidad, disposición a trabajar y deseo de crecer. “Con apoyo, acompañamiento y actitud, el IB es una experiencia profundamente enriquecedora”, añade. When speaking about leadership, Pett avoids stereotypes. “Here, we don’t develop leaders based on their position, but on their impact,” he states. Students take on responsibilities, participate in school initiatives, and learn to work as a team. “They understand that leading also involves listening and serving”, he remarks.
